If the name is taken, the beginning of the registration process will show it as already taken, and offer the other extensions, i.e., .net, .org. If the name's still available, it will say so and you may begin the registration process, leaving the domain name checked.
For .ca domain names use the box below ( i.e., yourname.ca )
